Obesity is an increasingly prevalent problem that affects the healthcare system and patients. Class III obese patients, in particular, may require special equipment, different policies, or extra staff to ensure appropriate care and patient satisfaction.  

Clinicians encounter distractions on a nearly continuous basis, and these distractions pose a constant threat to patient safety. Analysis of events reported in 2010 and 2011 identified more than 1,000 that could be attributed to distraction.
