Convenience at a Cost
Two hazardous practices are linked to reports of pieces of intravenous catheters being left in patients and embolizing: (1) modifying the ends of previously laced catheters, which can cause retained catheter fragments; and (2) using oxygen flow selectors in a manner that can cut off the patient's supplemental oxygen supply.
